School boundary and quadrant alignment project

Wednesday, June 23, 2026

Dear Worcester Public Schools Community,

We are writing to provide you with a status update on the Worcester Public Schools’ Boundary and Quadrant Alignment Project, which began this spring and will continue through 2028. The project seeks to relieve schools that are over-capacity or under-enrolled, while also providing more clear, predictable school pathways from preschool through graduation.

As a result of the district listening to community feedback, including from a series of public forums held this spring, we have shifted the timeline for initial recommendations to the Worcester School Committee from June to August, when it will be presented to the Standing Committee on Operations and Governance for initial review. (We shared this information with families recently.)

From September through November, a series of additional public forums will be held to gather community input on the initial scenarios. We anticipate the full Worcester School Committee to vote on the recommended scenario in December.

What Has Taken Place So Far:

Since March, public forums have been held to foster community conversation about the goals of the project, which are:

  • To reduce the student population in schools that are over capacity

  • To increase the student population in schools that are under enrolled

  • To ensure programming aligns with school building capacity along with student and community needs

  • Improve school pathways from elementary to middle to high school (feeder patterns)

  • And improve citywide/magnet designations of schools

We Hear You:

As a result of community conversations, we are more deeply examining how the following factors relate to the goals of the project:

  • Expanding school bus transportation and school walkability

  • Expanding preschool options for families

  • Equitable access to specialized programs and stronger program alignment between schools

  • Availability of after-school opportunities at the elementary schools

Save The Dates: Community Forums

The School Committee will hold further facilitated public hearings for community input.  We are in the process of finalizing locations and timeframes which will be communicated once information is available.  Forums are being scheduled to be held at varying times (midday, afternoon, and evening), formats (in-person and virtual), and have language interpretations.

The anticipated dates are:

  • Wednesday, September 2

  • Wednesday, September 16

  • Tuesday, September 29

  • Tuesday, October 13

  • Monday, October 19

  • Monday, October 26

  • Saturday, November 7

Share Your Input and Stay Informed

We encourage all WPS families to stay informed and share their input on this project:

Our ultimate goal is to enhance opportunities for the success of all students and families. We look forward to your participation in this important effort.

Sincerely,
Brian E. Allen
